The Spirit Tamers cannot really be classed as a rank. They are completely different to any of the other inhabitants found in Mortir Brima, and there is good reason for this. Whilst there is no particular religion linked in with this country, the Spirit Tamers have their own beliefs, which they practice away from the prying eyes of the rest of the country. They are different to anything that has ever been seen before, and they have good reason to be.
Beliefs: · Rather like pagans in the time before Christ, the Spirit Tamers believe that everything is linked into nature, one way or the other. Although they don't worship any set gods, they do hold Mother Nature within high regard. · There are four trees that are sacred to them, and every family has one of the four trees as their emblem. These trees are: The Elluad tree. A tree similar to England's native oak tree, in the spring, it flowers roses instead of blossom. The Remna tree. Willowy in appearance, this tree does not flower anything, but it is more well-known because of the deep gold colouration of its bark. The Nalbel tree. Almost skeletal-like in appearance, it remains bare and dead during the warmer months. Come winter, however, and the tree blossoms wonderfully, pale blue, icy flowers stemming from its branches. No one quite understands why, but the tree is held in high regard all the same. The Delsam tree. A withered and dead tree, the Delsam tree is a curious plant. It starts to bloom in the spring and by the summer, pale red flowers can be seen on its branches for about two weeks, before it suddenly dies without warning again. · The Spirit Tamers have only one weapon: their spear. However, their spears are not like one's normal spear; they are blessed by the Elder of the tribe before they can be given to the new Tamer. Inscriptions are also carved into the wood, but they can only be read when the Tamer touches their spear, and the inscriptions glow with the colour of the Tamer's aura. · Before one can become a Tamer, they are to be trained by another Tamer when they reach ten years old. The training often takes years to complete, and although they are given a blessed spear during their teenage years, it is not often until they complete their training that the inscriptions are carved onto it. · A Spirit Tamer's aura is discovered during their years of training as a teenager and never before. The most common aura colours are green, red, yellow, orange and blue, but the shades of the colours do vary somewhat.
What do Spirit Tamers do? Living in a tribe in the middle of Mortir Brima's wilderness does have its benefits. Animals of all elements can be located around the wilderness and are often a threat when one has no Bonded of their own to protect them against such dangers. Of course, the Spirit Tamers have Bondeds, but their power comes from their spears.
The ancient art of Mysticism has been practised within the tribe for centuries, long before the country was even discovered. It combines both Necromancy and Alchemy to create something new: the binding of spirits. The process is a difficult one to explain, but as the Tamers see it, it keeps the population of unbonded elementals down and provides them with a source of income.
Often travelling alone or in groups of two, Tamers keep the wilderness clean and protected. With their Bondeds, they make sure that no unbonded animals pose a particular threat to anyone, and the methods that they go about doing this are baffling to those who aren't a part of their tribe. Some see it as inhumane, whilst others don't really have a view on it.
When the Tamers come across an animal, or a group of animals, with elemental powers, they take away their spirits. The process is relatively harmless, and although it can be quite distressing for the animal involved, it is quick and painless. A beam of light comes forth from the Tamer's spear and draws the spirit of the animal into the spear, thus rendering the creature completely harmless.
Then the animals are captured and taken back to the tribe, where their spirits are extracted from the spear of their captor and placed into small glasses which are put around the necks of the animals. The creatures are then taken to Mortir Brima's market to be sold--with or without their spirits--and then the Tamers return home to complete the process all over again.
What can the animal do without a spirit? It is nothing but a work animal now. It cannot be Bonded to without its spirit, and it can be now used for help around the home or one's job.
But, if that's not for you, then you can always take the animal to the city Guardian and have its spirit restored to it, which is why the Tamers always sell the animal with its spirit in a bottle around its neck. Some people prefer to purchase 'dumbed down' elementals, whilst others like to restore their spirit to them and then sell them on to Trainers.
Thus, the cycle of Mortir Brima continues.
Why are they called 'Guardians of the Forests'? The tribe of Spirit Tamers is located within the vast forest of Mortir Brima's wilderness. They generally protect the forest more than anywhere else, as it is their home and has been their protection against the outside world for centuries. Some Tamers will browse other parts of the wilderness looking for unbonded animals, but most will stick to the forest.
Can I find and join the tribe? Not necessarily. Some may stumble upon it just by chance, but for the most part, its location is hidden extremely well. Those who do stumble across it are often kept as hostages until the Tribe Leader decides whether to let them go or not, but if you're lucky, they'll just give you a warning and march you to the edge of the forest.
As for joining the tribe, it's quite a hard thing to do. Not many have been able to join it; it's something you're born into, more than anything else. Those who have successfully joined the tribe have often been forced to undergo a series of extensive training modules in order to prove their worth to the tribe, and it is only then that they are accepted.
If you do manage to successfully join the tribe with the intention of becoming a Spirit Tamer, you'll have very little luck. Only those within the favour of the Tribe Leader who have been accepted into the tribe have the chance of becoming a Spirit Tamer, and to get the Tribe Leader to favour you is a very difficult thing indeed.
